Andrea Kimi Antonelli wins the 18th Supercorso Federale ACI Sport

The talent born in Bologna in 2006 wins the prize for Best Driver at the end-of-year course organized by the Scuola Federale. The Costanzo Del Balzo Trophy goes to Tuukka Taponen, the Finn young driver from FDA. The Scuola Federale has also formalized the agreement with Cetilar for the next Karting Evaluation Stage

At the Vallelunga "Piero Taruffi" racetrack, the Scuola Federale ACI Sport "Michele Alboreto" has developed an intense four-day program. From 7th to 10th November six young drivers (all Under 16) worked intensively with the Federal Instructors, Federation professionals and with the technical partners who arrived in the Roman circuit to collaborate in this great end-of-year event. The name and face of the Best Driver that emerged, after about 21 hours of sessions on the track and psychophysical assessments, belong to Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Thus, another step of growth in the career of the boy born in Bologna on 25 August 2006 is completed. The young racer blossomed in the first laps on four wheels with the Scuola Federale during the Kart Summer Camp (2014) is already twice in a row European Karting Champion. (2020, 2021). Recently, he has collected some presences in the Italian Formula 4 Championship that will probably be his next stage, dreaming of Formula 1. Ambitions and possibilities shared with the other cadets all very close in performance, as in the case of the Finn selected by Ferrari Driver Academy, Tuukka Taponen, who awarded the Costanzo Del Balzo Trophy. The award established a year ago in memory of “Gero”, the historic Director of the Scuola Federale, has been delivered for the second edition to the talent who also distinguished himself for motivation and character during the internship.

Here the words from the Director of the Scuola Federale Raffaele Giammaria: “every year is the best year of the Supercorso. That’s it, because the Federation, through our work at the Scuola, is constantly increasing the effort to feed the training camp of young talents. Our task is to identify them, help them, speed up the maturation times for the young drivers and make them arrive prepared for that at the right time, when the chance to shine will come. We are particularly proud of what we have done with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who started exactly from the first step proposed by ACI Sport in the Kart Summer Camp and whom everyone today sees as a beacon for Italian motorsport”.

The winner Andrea Kimi Antonelli commented: “I'm certainly very happy, it was a great experience and also a great opportunity to show off. I had a good time here. My father has been a driver and now he has a team of cars. Let's say that he passed on his passion for motorsport to me: at the age of 6 he put me on a kart and from there I always liked it. My secret desire? Definitely get to F1 and then become world champion”.

Marco Ferrari, Director of the ACI Automotive Sports Department: “after all the work done with the instructors and the staff of the Scuola, I only allow myself to give an advice to these guys: never lose the motivation to learn! They are the hope of motoring and they fully reflected the qualities they had shown before arriving here. It's nice to see so much motivation and passion for motorsport. We as a Federation have the task of helping and stimulating them to give their best. In recent years, the work of the Scuola increased and it represents a fundamental part of our commitment in this sense. I wish them all the best”.

The internship saw the six participants, all of the highest level, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Brando Badoer, Rafael Camara, Eliseo Donno, Tuukka Taponen and Valerio Rinicella, selected by the “University of Motoring” in collaboration with the Ferrari Driver Academy (in particular for the Finnish and Brazilian) at work under different aspects. First with the mental and athletic evaluations as always carried out by the Formula Medicine staff, with the Psychologist Alice Ferrisi and the Athletic Trainer Davide Faustini. Then, during the second day, on the track for a first experience with the "covered wheels" on Renault Clio RS by Fast Lane Promotion and managed by Progetto E20. Lastly, for the two most intense days, the young drivers raced on Iron Lynx Formula 4, all with Pirelli tyres. A work carried out with the constant support of the Supervisor Emanuele Pirro, the Head of the Youth Project and President of the ACI Sport Speed Commission Giancarlo Minardi and with all the Federal Instructors Niki Cadei, Eddie Cheever, Gabriele Lancieri, Renato Leporelli, Edoardo Liberati, Sandro Montani, Luca Persiani, Christian Pescatori, Ivan Pezzolla, and Enrico Toccacelo. Fundamental was the reference of the two specialists of the Research and Training section of the Scuola Federale, the Pedagogist Glenda Cappello and the professor of neuroscience Lucio Tonello, who developed theory lessons with the cadets, but also with refresher courses with the Federal Instructors themselves. There have been moments of confrontation for the boys also with Eng. Marco Matassa from Ferrari Driver Academy, who already knew well the talents involved in the course and passed to Fiorano through the ACI-FDA Camp: preliminary activities carried out in synergy between the two realities precisely according to the choice of young drivers for the Supercorso.

During the closing ceremony, ACI Sport formalized with Cetilar the agreement in favour of karting drivers. They will offer a prize to the best driver in the next Karting Stage, which will take place in December. Thus announced Roberto Lacorte, representing Cetilar: “I want to thank ACI Sport because all this comes at a particular moment in which the Federation is reacting strongly. Italy is the centre of motorsport, especially in karting, so we want to support the work of the Scuola, because the Federation deserves the help of all those who care about this sport. Let's start with this first phase, from the karting activities, but then we want to continue to expand our help in the future”.

Another novelty of this edition: for the first time the Supercorso Federale was broadcast on ACI Sport TV. Several hours of live TV to tell the salient moments, useful for appreciating the technical gestures of the boys on Formula 4.
