It’s time to hit the track again: the Campionato Italiano Sport Prototipi arrives in Mugello

The fifth round of the 2023 season on the Tuscanian circuit will see the continuation of the three-way fight between Matteo Roccadelli (BHK Motorsport), Emil Hellberg (Bad Wolves), and Davide Uboldi (Uboldi Racing)

The engines of the Campionato Italiano Sport Prototipi rev again for the fifth and penultimate round of the 2023 season. After a thrilling battle on the tracks of Imola, Pergusa, and Monza, which hosted two rounds of the championship, it’s now time for the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello to be its scenery. The Wolf GB08 Thunder are ready to plow through the 5245 meters of the Italian circuit, which fits their characteristics almost perfectly as their lightness and handiness allow the drivers to reach some of the best timings in the whole ACI Racing Weekend.

At the top of the standings is Matteo Roccadelli (BHK Motorsport), whose Monza round didn’t go as planned as he was the protagonist of a series of unpleasant events. The driver from Vercelli leads the overall standings with 101 points - and with 110 in the Coppa ACI Sport Under 25 - but will have to serve an eight-position penalty that was handed to him in Monza after he failed to follow the race direction’s instructions. Due to that, Roccadelli will also see his four consecutive pole positions’ record break, as he will have to start from the back anyway.

What could be in his favor is the ongoing battle for second place, which sees Emil Hellberg with 87 points and Davide Uboldi just behind after winning his first race of the season in Monza. With 78 points, the driver from Como will try to replicate the double podium finish in the Mugellian weekend, even if he will have the maximum ballast imposed as he was the driver that collected most of the points in Monza.

Fourth in the overall standings is now Jesse Menczer with 69 points, in front of the absent Danny Molinaro, who has given up the possibility of winning again after his championship victory back in 2021. After the first win in Monza’s race-1, Alister Yoong, son of the former F1 driver Alex Yoong, flew to the sixth position in the standings and third in the Under 25.

Right after a double-class win in Monza, Giovanni Mazza arrives at Mugello with a quite high chance to close the Coppa ACI Sport Master championship, while the round in Brianza also saw Donald Milokanovic’s second win of the season, with the Croatian driver returning home with 85 points total. Mugello will also see a pretty delightful return to the Campionato Italiano Sport Prototipi paddock of Giovanni Maschio, the young Italian driver who participated in the Tuscanian round of 2022. Maschio is currently busy with the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, the highest single-seater category promoted by ACI Sport, but will be back at the wheel of the Wolf GB08 Thunder while waiting for the FRECA season finale in October.

The schedule for the weekend sees a pretty intense Friday, September 29, with the two 25-minute free practice sessions going underway at 8:30 and 12:40, and the qualifying round starting at 16:55. The two races are scheduled for Saturday, September 30, at 14:40 and Sunday, October 1st, at 9:00. The races will be live streamed on the YouTube and Facebook channels of the Campionato Italiano Sport Prototipi. The first race won’t be streamed live on ACI Sport TV, channel 228 on Sky, but it will be available later, while race-2 will be live.
