Music and Emilia-Romagna: an indissoluble binomial that began in the past and continues to this day. Suffice it to say that this is the land where the great musician Giuseppe Verdi was born in a small hamlet in the municipality of Busseto in the province of Parma. Melodrama has always been an indispensable cultural aspect for those living in the region. This is testified by the 77 historical theatres still active in its territory. As many as six are the ‘temples’ dedicated to carrying on the tradition of opera and ‘bel canto’: Teatro Municipale in Piacenza, Teatro Regio in Parma, Teatro Municipale ‘Romolo Valli’ in Reggio Emilia, Teatro Comunale ‘Luciano Pavarotti’ in Modena, Teatro Comunale ‘Claudio Abbado’ in Ferrara, and Teatro Comunale ‘Dante Alighieri’ in Ravenna. These are joined by the region’s main opera body, the Fondazione Teatro Comunale di Bologna. The programme of operas is obviously very rich, enhanced by the presence of contemporary musical geniuses such as Maestro Riccardo Muti, who never fails to be present at the annual Ravenna Festival held in the city where the famous conductor resides. It is also impossible to forget the ‘Festival Verdi’ that is repeated every year for an entire month in different locations between Parma and Busseto where the Concorso Internazionale di Voci Verdiane is also held.
